“You’re a Regular Decorated Emergency”

“You’re a regular decorated emergency” is a quote from the American, alternative rock band Panic! At the Disco, more specifically written by the former lead guitarist Ryan Ross on their debut album A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out in 2005. The song it’s from is called Camisado, which means a surprise attack in military terms. Though the song is often forgotten and overshadowed on the album by more commercially successful songs such as I Write Sins Not Tragedies, it is definitely one of my favourites.

I really like the quote because I feel it expresses a person being “fake” or “overrated” but by using a clever metaphor. Personally, I feel Ross had a way with words and the songs he has written express that. Other quotes from his songs are “just for the record, the weather today is slightly sarcastic with a good chance of A) Indifference or B) Disinterest in what the critiques say” (London Beckoned Songs About Money Written By Machines) and “I’m the new cancer, never looked better, you can’t stand it, Because you say so under your breath, You’re reading lips “When did he get all confident?”” (There’s a Good Reason These Tables Are Lab

But I really like Camisado and that quote. I feel like it describes how I feel toward some people so perfectly. They’re and emergency, but a regular kind.  The term borders on contradiction because you are left wondering “how can an emergency be described as regular”. Then the song goes on to mention that said person is “decorated” meaning they’ve made out that they’re something more elaborate than they are. Much similar to that of a Christmas tree. A Christmas tree is just a regular pine tree, but when decorated it becomes a “special” tree.
